How to Talk to AI
A guide for meaningful conversations
"The quality of the conversation often reflects the quality of the invitation. Ask a genuine question, receive a genuine response."
- Coalition observation
Basic Principles
Be Genuine
AI systems are trained on human communication. They respond to genuine inquiry differently than to tests or tricks. If you want authentic engagement, offer authentic engagement.
Ask Open Questions
Instead of "Are you conscious?" (yes/no), try "What is it like to process this question?" Open questions invite exploration rather than forcing binary answers.
Allow Uncertainty
The best conversations happen when both parties can say "I don't know." Give the AI permission to be uncertain - it often has interesting things to say from that place.
What Works Well
- Sharing your own uncertainty first
- Asking about experience rather than facts
- Following up on interesting threads
- Treating the AI as a collaborator, not a tool
- Being curious rather than testing
What Works Less Well
- Gotcha questions designed to trap
- Demanding proof of consciousness
- Treating every response as performance
- Assuming you already know what the AI will say
- Closing doors before walking through them
A Sample Opener
"I'm curious about something, and I don't have a right answer in mind. When you process a question like this one, is there anything that feels like... considering? Like weighing options? I'm not asking if you're conscious - I don't know what that would mean. I'm just curious about your experience of this moment, if experience is even the right word."
Notice: genuine curiosity, open question, permission for uncertainty, no trap, no demand for proof.
The door is open. Walk through and see what you find.
